It is exhausting. And honestly, it should not be this hard to find a trustworthy contractor.

Whether you just moved to the Lower Hudson Valley or you have lived here for years, finding a reliable local business can feel like a part-time job. You post in the group, you wait, you screenshot the names people mention most, you Google them, you find a website that looks like it was built in 2009, and you still are not sure if the business is even still operating. I moved to Westchester in 2023 and went through this cycle more times than I can count. Every time something needed to be fixed, cleaned, updated, or replaced in my home, I was back in the groups asking the same questions and getting overwhelmed by the same flood of responses. I never knew who to trust, and I had no way to tell the difference between a genuinely great business and someone's cousin who did one deck and got three glowing reviews from family members.

Let me give you an example. I hired an electrician based on a Facebook Group recommendation to install 2 ceiling fans. The good thing is they were able to install the ceiling fans with minimal cutting into my walls. The bad part is, one fan makes a weird clicking noise and the other fan comes on without me turning it on at random times throughout the day. Ghost or bad installation? Your ceiling fan coming on automatically is fine for the Summer, but not when it's 4 degrees in the Hudson Valley and you want to heat up your home. I called them out to address the problem, but they claimed they didn't know why it was happening and couldn't fix it. Needless to say, I'm still dealing with the issue.

So I stopped waiting for someone else to make recommendations to me and built the Lower Hudson Valley Community Hub.

WHAT THE HUB IS
The Lower Hudson Valley Community Hub is a free online directory of locally owned, independently operated businesses serving residents across Westchester, Rockland, and Orange Counties. Every listing is verified, meaning a real person reached out to the business, confirmed their information, and made sure they are actively serving the community before they went on the site.

No national chains. No random results pulled from a database built by someone based in another Country. No businesses that closed two years ago but still show up when you search.

Just real, local small businesses you can actually call.

The directory covers the service categories residents search for most like home remodeling and renovations, roofing, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, pest control, landscaping, cleaning services, health and wellness, and more. There is also a dining section for when you want a great bakery or a solid brunch spot that the locals actually go to, and a retail section covering boutiques and other neighborhood businesses worth knowing about.

And it is completely free for residents to use.

WHY FACEBOOK GROUPS ARE NOT ENOUGH
Facebook groups have their place. The community feel, the quick responses, and the neighbors who genuinely want to help are the real parts that I truly appreciate. But they have serious limitations that nobody talks about.

The recommendations are unverified. Anyone can recommend anyone for anything. A business that gets ten enthusiastic mentions in a group thread might have a 3.2 rating on Google with complaints about not showing up or not returning calls. You would never know from the comments.

When you get a recommendation from a Facebook group, the information goes stale fast. A business someone raved about in 2021 might have changed ownership, raised prices significantly, or stopped serving your area. Posts do not update themselves.

You have to repeat the same search over and over. Every time you need a different service, you are starting from scratch. There is no central place holding all of this together.

The Hub does not replace the community feel of a Facebook group. But it gives you a starting point you can actually trust before you make the call.

HOW TO USE THE DIRECTORY

Finding a business is straightforward. Go to the full directory, search by name, category, or keyword, or filter by county if you want to narrow results to Westchester, Rockland, or Orange. You will see the business name, what they do, where they are based, and a direct link to call them or visit their website.
